Calvin Turns One

You know what’s one of the most validating experiences as a professional photographer is to have other professional photographers choose you to create their memories. It’s even a bigger gift when they ask for everything to be edited in black and white, because that is my favourite way to shoot.

Nicole and Kris are local photographers and good friends. When their son Calvin turned one, it was a personal and professional honour to photograph his birthday celebration.

Calvin is a miracle child. They tried for years to have a second child, but it took some fancy science footwork and a lot of strong prayers before they Calvin came into their family.

They always make me feel like I’m part of their family. Which makes blending into the fabric of the session great. We started when Calvin awoke from his nap and ended at bath time.

I love photographing these kinds of events because I get to make memories of what it actually felt like. Like how Calvin wasn’t really that interested in his cake, and how his flailing knocked it right off the table. His older brother, Ethan, helped him open presents. And how it was the first of likely many events in their lives that are Calvin and Hobbes themed. Great job with the decorations Nicole!
